Both behaviors are ostensibly benign, but produce comparable measurement results, making it complex to define the difference. But other times it is an expected behavior that is intended to level out traffic across networks to prevent disproportionate performance. Sometimes poor performance is unexpected and is simply a result of inadequate network management. These two implicit concepts make throttling difficult to apply a unilateral, metric-based definition that can apply across all types of regions and contexts.įor one thing, the behavior of ISPs is difficult to confidently explain from the outside, even without the potential involvement of nefarious actors. “Slow” is a relative term, and “intentional” behavior can often hide under the guise of unintended consequences. When one’s internet bandwidth is throttled, it results in poor performance of web content or service for the user.” According to this definition, unlike the binary nature of shutdowns, the behavioral patterns of throttling are best observed on the spectrum of Internet performance.

It is employed by ISPs to regulate network traffic and ease bandwidth congestion. If you’d like any more information about Communicator’s Throttling, speak to your Account Manager.Throttling is difficult to define in a data-driven wayĪccess Now defines bandwidth throttling as: “the intentional slowing of an internet service or a type of internet traffic by an internet service provider (ISP). The sliding bar lets users choose from rates 1,000 to 250,000 per hour. Staggering sends means you’ll get the same number of people calling but they’ll be staggered throughout the day. In much the same way as spikes in traffic to a site can be an issue, if your call to action is offline, this can be a problem too – especially for call centres with limited resource.Īgain, Throttling can help here. Too many calls to a call centre at one time It’ll give the same results, just at different times – meaning it’s not as much of a burden on your site, reducing the risk of it crashing. If your hosting package can’t cope, then emails can be throttled to ensure website visits are more staggered.

That places a huge burden on a website’s hosting, meaning you run the risk of the site crashing and going offline for all. Too much traffic to a website at one timeĪ compelling campaign sent to thousands or millions of people can drive a lot of traffic to a website at one time. When brands start sending to large volumes of recipients at the same time, they sometimes start to come across challenges: 1. If it took 5 minutes extra for each segment, because there would be 10 sending segments, your dispatch would take an extra 50 minutes to complete. That means if you send to a total of 100,000 subscribers with a throttle rate of 10,000/hour, and on the occasion it takes 5 minutes to send 10,000 emails, then your dispatch would actually take slightly longer to complete than you might imagine. It’s worth noting, however, that the pause between each throttled segment (which is 1 hour) starts at the end of each segment’s sending process, which could take a few minutes. In theory, the example above is exactly how Communicator’s Throttling works.

So, if you have a dispatch volume of 100,000 subscribers, but set a throttle rate of 10,000/hour, there will only ever be a maximum volume of 10,000 sent out each hour until the total is reached a few hours later.

That means, within Communicator, you can set a maximum hourly volume (the throttle rate), no matter how large the dispatch volume is.

What we actually mean is the ability to automatically space out the sending of large email dispatches. When we say “Throttling” at Communicator, we don’t mean Homer Simpson’s famous parental bonding technique. For many years now, our email marketing platform, Communicator, has allowed marketers to throttle email dispatches.
